About the Course

This program is approved by Iowa DOT for parent-taught Iowa driver's ed online. Young motorists and their parents or guardians can complete this course at their own pace to satisfy Iowa driver's ed requirements.

The program includes 30 hours of high-quality lessons about road safety, motor vehicle operation and traffic laws. At the end of the 10 learning modules, students must pass a 50-question, multiple-choice exam to pass the class.

How It Works

After you earn your instruction permit, the next step toward your full license is getting an intermediate license. This allows you to drive unsupervised during certain hours. You must have a valid permit for at least 12 months before you apply for your intermediate license.

Completing parent-taught driver education and earning an intermediate license is a five-step process:

  1. Verify that both teacher and student are eligible for the course.
  2. Complete an approved Iowa driver's education course and get 30 hours of driving practice.
  3. Submit the required certificate, driving log and license application to the DOT.
  4. Receive a letter of completion from the state.
  5. Schedule and pass a driving test.

After a successful road test, students will be issued an intermediate driver's license.
